Our rabbitry is made up of three main parts...
The Hutches
Photo Taken Fall 2010
Each hutch creates a separate home for each rabbit complete with a back box to sleep, nest/kindle, and for a few, creates the ideal place to poop! All of our hutches are built on site, and we always seem to be building more! The first picture below shows the oldest hutches in the old outside area. Since then, we have added 7 more hutches and moved to a new outside location with more trees (second photo)! Hutches are kept in the barn during the cold months. During warm months, they are all moved outside under shady trees.
The Girls
Check out the Girls' Pen Page to see how it use to be! We have now converted it into a nursery since our old nursery building got taken down and we have downsized enough that everyone can have their own hutch space. It holds 4 does in the winter, and up to 5 does in the summer. The building itself is insulated and has a heat lamp that is kept on constantly during the cold months.
The Running Yards
The favorite part of the rabbitry by far! A place to relax, unwind, whatever! We have 6 running yard at this time. These are really easy and somewhat cheap to make, and they really help with various aspects of raising rabbits. It allows running breeds to do what they do best, provides mama and litters with extra room to stretch their legs, rabbits who love to dig get a chance to burn off some energy, and just gives the rabbits something new to do!
Our set up is really simple. The only thing we have in each yard is a wooden hut so they can get out of the sun. Other than that, the rabbits keep themselves pretty busy. We try to switch out every 2 hours so everyone gets a chance to run every two to three days.
The pictures shown were taken during the winter (while it was so warm out, the rabbits got to enjoy the weather too!), so the grass is rather sad looking. Shown below is what the yard and hut look like (left) and just how big they actually are with a havana rabbit inside (right).
